Magellanic Penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus).
Locally known as Jackass Penguins because of the laughing call they make.
120,000 breeding pairs in the Falkland Islands, 1,500,000 Worldwide.
They are the only penguin to nest in burrows, dug out from the soft peat. Two
eggs are laid in October and chicks fledge in late January.
King Penguin (aptenodytes patagonicus). 400 breeding pairs in the Falkland
Islands 1,500,000 Worldwide It's the largest of the Falkland Penguins (90cms)
Adults make no nest and incubate a single large egg on their feet. Chicks hatch
at the end of the austral summer and over winter in creches prior to fledging
the following spring.
Southern Rockhopper Penguin, Falkland Islands. Latin Eudyptes chrysocome
chrysocome 300,000 breeding pairs in the Falkland Islands, 550,000 Worldwide Two
eggs of unequal size are laid in early November but only the larger one usually
makes it. They fledge after 10 weeks in early February.
